Latest assault on the smoking ban comes up short…

Filed under: Politics — Dave @ 1:06 pm

The organization “Partnership for Job Preservation” submitted a ballot proposal and 1400 signatures to undo some of the smoking ban for private clubs, bars and restaurants. Unfortunately for them only 776 of the signatures were valid according to State Attorney General Marc Dann. 1000 were required.

I don’t know whether they can quickly get another batch of signature to make up the difference – but I hope not.

900+ Photos…

Filed under: personal — Dave @ 9:39 pm

…. is how many pictures I took at Parade the Circle. It’s going to take me forever to pare these down to a publishable set. Such a beautiful day. Had we been sitting in the sun the weather would have been perfect.Perfect day

We tried to get down there early to save curb space. We arrived more than an hour early and we still could not find suitable curb space. I’ll have to plan for 10am next time.

Unfortunately we couldn’t stay for any of the performances because we had this strange, what to call it, kind of a memorial for a suicide. A friend’s sister had committed suicide this week and we got together to help her sort of, memorialize her sister.

We had no idea what to do or how to dress. We bought some pre-prepared food from whole foods and dressed sort of “business casual”.

There was a lot of food and a few readings. People who knew her were crying. Other than that it was more like a party.

Winged Thing

Sunday the beautiful weather continued and after some necessary running around Sunday morning I got to spend the afternoon relaxing and writing code for a php project. I’ve yet to get good and reliable development environment set up for PHP so I’m still editing files locally and then copy the files up to the server to run – debugging with print statements.

The smoking ban part 2. Coming to a ballot near you!

Filed under: Politics — Dave @ 12:00 pm

A petition may soon be circulating to get a law loosening the restrictions of the smoking ban on the ballot. The original ban was passed by a significant margin so it’s going to take some work to sell this loosening. Here are some of the things they’re pushing for.

* They want to allow smoking in bars that make less than 10% of their income from food. In other words, they want smoking in bars but not restaurants.

* They want smoking in private clubs

* They want smoking in bowling alleys after 6pm.

It’s a weird mish-mash of items. Presumably this list is the result of compromises necessary to bring together a large enough “Coalition of the willing”.

So, how will it be sold?

My guess is they will concentrate on the private club provision. It’s probably the issue for which people will have the most sympathy. People may sign feeling that, in private clubs people should be able to smoke if they want. They probably will not be told that the provision will put smoking back in bars and bowling alleys.

Another thing petition signers may not be told is what the definition of a private club is. Will it be a definition that truly applies to what we think of as a private club today? Or will it be a definition that allows any establishment to declare itself a private club and thereby exempt itself from the smoking ban? Or will it even be defined at all?

The front group for this petition effort is called the “Partnership for Job Preservation of Ohio” whose web site seems to be down as of this writing.

The group has submitted the proposed petition language to our state attorney general Marc Dann along with 1400 signatures (1000 required) to get the wheels moving. The next steps are (1) 1000 of those signatures have to be deemed valid and (2) Marc Dann has to approve of the petition language which must accurately reflect the intent of the law.

Once those two hurdles are jumped the petitioners will be hitting the streets to collect the necessary 400,000 signatures. At this time it’s not clear whether the Tobacco industry, which heavily financed issue 4, the smoking amendment, last year will be helping to bankroll this effort.

I officially become “The Man”

My tenant has signed the lease. That will take some financial stress away (I hope).

The final cleaning was a sweating, dirty affair taking about 15 hours but the place looked move-in fresh. I hope she has at least half as good a time there as I did.

Cool List of Freeware

Filed under: Technology — Dave @ 9:58 am

I’m not against paying for software and I’ve spent thousands on software over the years but I love checking out free software. I would love to stop paying for office software for example. That kind of functionality just seems like it should be part of buying the computer. I get a new PC every year or two and each time I get more hesitant to spend the money for the MS office suite.

I also don’t like the trend of commercial software to be more in control of my experience. I’ve heard stories of software disabling parts of itself when it gets old, so you need to buy upgrades. I have commercial software, paint shop pro, which, since it has been bought by corel, nags me with ads for other corel products, not to mention it crashes now.

Well, I came across another list of free stuff that I’ll be checking out
